Out of Print: The Story of Bob Katzman

A few weeks ago a Columbia College film student made a short film about Bob Katzman and his store Magazine Memories. Bob is a Downtown Skokie business owner. Before he opened his store on Oakton a few years ago, his store was located on Dempster in Morton Grove. The Katzman family is also long time family friends with the Kruger (Sweety Pies) family. Several months ago I stopped by Bob’s store to say hello. He handed me a few of his information papers he keeps up front. I took them home, read his biography and knew I wanted to know more about this man and his life.

Legendary Chicago Writer Willard Motley

Willard Motley's first novel, Knock on Any Door, is on the short list of the greatest Chicago novels ever written. This African American writer brilliantly creates the story of Italian American Nick Romano, a street thug who eventually murders. This book also has the best fictional account of life and death in Chicago's Depression-Era Skid Row.

Congratulations to Rep Lang! Illinois Senate Approves Medical Marijuana Bill

The Senate today approved legislation that would allow doctors to prescribe medical marijuana to patients with serious illnesses, sending the measure to Gov. Pat Quinn.

The issue pitted supporters arguing for compassion for those suffering from pain they say only cannabis can ease against opponents who contend the legislation would undermine public safety.

Federal Funding Available

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) announced that federal disaster aid in the form of individual assistance has been made available for a number of Illinois counties, including Cook County, due to the severe storms and flooding that occurred on April 18, 2013. Skokie residents (homeowners and renters) and business owners who sustained losses from these storms may be eligible for disaster aid. The level of assistance will be assessed and determined by FEMA and covers basic needs only. Assistance will not normally compensate for the entire loss.
