Free Citizenship Classes at Skokie Public Library

Beginning January 20th, free citizenship preparation classes will be offered at the Skokie Public Library in partnership with Oakton Community College and the Alliance for Lifelong Learning on Fridays from 6-8:45 pm.

 

The nine week class will teach students about eligibility for naturalization, US history and governmantion as well as how proper diction and other tips for getting though the naturalization interview.

Crime Down in Skokie During 2011

Marks Fourth Consecutive Year of Decline in Crime

 

Preliminary statistics show that, overall, crime in Skokie declined by four percent in 2011 from 2010 crime levels.  This marks the fourth consecutive year of declining crime in the community.

Pioneer Page Turners Next Book Chat is About the Life of Henrietta Lacks

The next live chat book discussion for the Pioneer Page Turners online book club will take place at 7 p.m. Feb. 2 and feature The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot. Lacks, an African-American tobacco farmer in the south, played a vital role in the development of the polio vaccine, as well as advances in gene mapping, in vitro fertilization and cloning. The only thing was, she wasn’t around to know about it.

Skokie Homeowners May be Eligible for 2008 Storm Damage Grants

 

 

Federal grant money recently became available through the Illinois “IKE” Disaster Recovery Program, to potentially assist Skokie homeowners who have damage remaining from the September 13 and 14, 2008 severe rain storms and flooding.

As a kid of fifteen with a decidedly liberal political bent, I really wanted to be part of the parade and rally and see my idol, John Fitzgerald Kennedy in person. My Aunt Della, who worked for County Commissioner and 50th Ward Committeeman Jerome Huppert, pulled a few strings to let me part of the ward contingent going downtown that memorable Friday night of November 4, 1960.

Skokie Police Headquarters Selected as APWA Project of the Year

The Village of Skokie was recently awarded the 2012 Project of the Year Award by the Suburban Branch of the Chicago Metro Chapter of the American Public Works Association (APWA) for the Skokie Police Headquarters in the Structures - $5 Million, but less than $25 Million category. The 80,000-square-foot facility opened in October 2010.

 

The award recognizes excellence in completing Public Works projects and alliances

between the municipality, consultant and the contractor. The distinction will be

Honor and Support Military Families! Volunteers Needed

Chicagoland Military Families has announced a new program designed to connect military families in Chicago and the surrounding suburbs. Volunteers are needed to act as military family outreach advocates and Blue Star coordinators to spread awareness of the Blue Star Tradition.

 

A Blue Star Banner displayed in a window signifies that a family member in the household is an active member in the United States Armed Forces. Chicagoland Military Families is seeking out eligible families to honor with Blue Star Banners.
