Greetings from the Land of Greed

We haven’t heard from the 99% in a while Occupying Wall Street, LaSalle Street, or any other street and I’m wondering why. On Tuesday, May 7th, the Chicago Tribune reported that the average multiple of CEOs’ salaries at the top 100 U.S.A. firms is 204 times their average worker’s combined salary and benefit package. Even though this sounds outrageous, it may not even be accurate.

Requiem for an Old Politician

Calvin R. Sutker, former Democratic Committeeman of Niles Township, State Representative, County Commissioner and Skokie Trustee died last Thursday at age 89. Those are only the elective offices. Sutker also served in numerous appointive positions. Cal was one of the last of the old pols, those politicians who toed the party line, usually bringing victory and jobs in their wake. So many Cook County officials were present at his funeral that If terrorists struck they would have wiped out half of the county’s government.

Allen’s speech-Cal Sutker-April 26, 2013

I was not the easiest kid growing up. In fact some people thought I was hyperactive. If I hit my sisters, or had a tantrum my mom would punish me. Then, my dad would take me aside, and hug and kiss me. Then take me to the old Turnstyle, in Skokie, for a toy.

Retire On Your Own Terms

Most Americans are aware that they need to save for retirement. It is a topic that is easy to brush aside to a later date because although the subject is important, it may not seem urgent. But the longer you put off some basic retirement planning, the harder it will be to catch up later.

Local Entrepreneur Shalom Klein talks via Forbes Magazine

"The question of whether there are jobs more suited to men or women is one that fascinates me because responses are diverse and often controversial.  One such response came from Shalom Klein, a colleague, business owner and CEO of Jewish B2B Networking.  According to Shalom, there are in fact positions suited to both genders."

Spearing Sacred Cows

These days people are working from home, going to school from home, and shopping from home. E-mail and other social networking sites are the preferred mode of communication. Even telephones are becoming obsolete.

Leave it to Skokie, and Beaver, and Ward’s Joke Letter

by John Bengtson "the great detective of silent film locations" New York Times

"This post has nothing to do with silent movies, but I’ve really been enjoying watching Leave it to Beaver on Netflix instant streaming. When they showed this idyllic small town main street during a scene from “Beaver’s Fortune” (Season 3:Episode 10; first broadcast December 5, 1959), I had to hit the freeze frame to figure it out."

A Recipe for Rest While Congress Is On Recess

I've been enjoying Congress'es recess. There has been a lull in newspaper articles about Congresspeople arguing and maligning each other. The news stations have been a tad quieter, too. It’s time for us all to take a collective deep breath. Oops! Did I use the word collective?
