Free Help For Filing Income Tax

Check out these organizations for free help filing your income taxes.

The AARP Tax-Aide program offers free one-on-one counseling, as well as assistance on the telephone and internet to help individuals prepare basic tax forms such as the 1040, 1040A, 1040EZ and other standard schedules. The service is available for seniors 60 and over. Taxpayers must call ahead to make an appointment and bring all necessary documents with them. AARP's Tax-Aide program is available from February 1st through April 15th.

The most convenient Skokie location is at the Smith Activities Center,  5120 Galitz St., in downtown Skokie. Call 847.933.8208 to make an appointment.

The City of Chicago's Tax Assistance Center in partnership with The Center for Economic Progress  (www.centerforprogress.org) will help taxpayers with incomes at $35,000 or below complete their tax forms. The United Way of Metropolitan Chicago partners with Ladder Up and other community organizations to assist lower-income families prepare their taxes. Free tax preparation will be available on specific Saturdays until April. You can find a location by visiting

Tax Forms and Publications

Free copies of some tax forms are available from January 1st through April 15th in the display on the second floor landing at Skokie Public Library . If you don't see the form you need, ask a librarian for assistance.

Many tax forms and publications are also accessible on the Internet. If you're accessing the forms from computers at Skokie Public Library, you can print them for ten cents ($.10) per page. If you're accessing the tax forms and publications from home, you may need to download the Adobe Acrobat Reader. While the Library can supply originals or copies of some forms, staff members cannot give tax advice. Several agencies and organizations are available to help you with questions about your taxes.

Circuit Breaker and Illinois Cares Rx forms

"The Illinois Department on Aging's Circuit Breaker program provides grants to senior citizens and persons with disabilities to help them reduce the impact of taxes and prescription medications on their lives. When the costs of property taxes and prescription medicines begin to "overload" our seniors and persons with disabilities, this program steps in to help, just as a circuit breaker prevents overloads in an electrical system."

AARP Tax Counseling for Seniors

AARP Tax Counseling for Seniors is a FREE tax preparation service provided by AARP volunteers in the community.

 

Federal Income Tax help is provided free-of-charge to qualifying Skokie residents starting February 9, 2010 , through April 6, 2010 from 9:00-12:00.
