Sixth Annual Illinois Emerging Writers Competition, Gwendolyn Brooks Poetry Award

Secretary of State and State Librarian Jesse White and the Illinois Center for the Book are pleased to announce the sixth annual Illinois Emerging Writers Competition, Gwendolyn Brooks Poetry Award. Named for the late awardwinning poet and Illinois Poet Laureate Gwendolyn Brooks, the contest promotes creative writing, encourages local writers, and provides a unique opportunity for recognizing new literary talent in the state.

 

The competition is open to Illinois residents age 18 and over.

Spring Forward and Check Your Batteries on March 14, 2010

Daylight savings time begins on Sunday, March 14, 2010 when clocks need to be set forward one hour. The Skokie Fire Department reminds residents to check batteries in all smoke and carbon monoxide detectors and in all emergency kits to make sure they are in working condition.

Skokie Announces Know Your Neighbor Week May 17 through 23, 2010

During the week of May 17 through May 23, 2010, the Village of Skokie launches Know Your Neighbor Week during which residents are encouraged to host a neighborhood coffee to get to know one another and to celebrate each others similarities and differences.

The Know Your Neighbor Week program is funded by The Chicago Community Trust Immigrant Integration Initiative and co-sponsored by the Human Relations Commission.

Ida Crown Academy OK'd to Build

Plans for the Ida Crown Jewish Academy to build on the old Rand McNally site at 8255 Central Park have been approved by the Skokie Village Board of Trustees. Half of the property will be re-zoned residential, while the other half will remain zoned for industrial use in order to ensure against losing more tax revenue. Construction could start in 18 months, with completion by 2013.

The Skokie Village Hall offices at 5127 Oakton Street, Skokie, will be closed on Monday, February 15, 2010 in honor of Presidents’ Day.

Skokie Village Board Considers Raise in Utility Tax

To close the gap between Village expenses and revenue shortfalls caused by employee pension obligations and the national economic downturn, the Skokie Village Board is considering imposing a 5% utility tax on all users in the Village.  According to a detailed memorandum from Village Manager Albert J. Rigoni, at this time it is necessary to adopt a tax to increase revenues.  Skokie's property taxes have been frozen since 1991.

 

Citizens Reveal Positive View of Skokie Services

According to a fall, 2009 citizen survey administered by the National Research Center in Boulder, Colorado, Skokie residents enjoy life in the community and are generally pleased with Village services. When asked to rate their overall quality of life in Skokie and Skokie as a place to live, 93% of those surveyed gave ratings of either excellent or good in both categories.

In October 2009, 1,200 randomly selected single- and multi-family homes received a written survey questionnaire.

National Burn Awareness Week

 

National Burn Awareness Week is the first full week of February. Each year, approximately 114,000 children under age 14 are treated for fire and burn injuries and 500 children die to unintentional fire and burn-related injuries. Scald burns that are caused by hot liquid or steam are the most common cause of burn injuries to children.

The Skokie Carrier Watch Program authorizes postal carriers to notify the Human Services Division if a resident's mail has accumulated for more than 24 hours.
