Science Cafe is back for another season of thought-provoking discussion! On tap for September: the science of brewing beer.

 

"Beer Science! Beer Scientist!" will be presented at The Firehouse Grill, 7500 Chicago Ave. in Evanston on Wednesday, Sept. 22nd at 6:30pm.

 

We'll talk about the basics of processing and fermentation and the production differences between lager and ale.

Constitution Day Discussion about Islamic Center at Ground Zero

Celebrate Constitution Day 2010 by attending a discussion about the controversial proposal to construct an Islamic center and mosque near Ground Zero in New York City.

 

The discussion will be held Wednesday, Sept. 22nd at pm at Oakton Community College, 1600 E. Golf Road, Des Plaines.

Oakton Offers $109 for Online Courses

Enhance professional skills without leaving home via distance learning courses offered through the Alliance for Lifelong Learning at Oakton Community College.
     
Online courses require email, a Web browser (Internet Explorer; Firefox) and Internet access. Adobe Flash and Adobe Reader also are required. Classes run for eight weeks beginning Wednesday, Sept. 15. Each featured course is $109 ($70 for in-district seniors age 60 or older).

Enhance management and marketing skills this fall by “logging on” to distance learning courses offered through Oakton Community College.
     
Online courses require email, capable Web browser, and a minimum 56.6 kbps Internet connection. Classes run for 12 weeks starting Monday, Sept. 20.

CEDA Spearheads New Head Start Program Near Skokie -- School Starts September 7

The Community and Economic Development Association of Cook County, Inc. (CEDA) has entered into a formal partnership with Kids Academy to provide a comprehensive Head Start program for children between ages of 3 and 5.  This project is being funded under the Office of Head Start/Administration for Children and Families.


Registration is occurring now. Opening Day is September 7, 2010.

Extraordinary Students Honored At Skokie Holiday Inn Event

The Global Organization of People Of Indian Origin (GOPIO) honored outstanding Midwest medical and high school students at an awards banquet held July 11th at the Holiday Inn in Skokie.

 

Five students were honored. Shikkar Shah and Urveel Shah each received the Subhash Mehta Scholarship Award for their academic excellence.

 

Blake Freeman, Adrianna Kashuba and Mara Terras each received the Gandhi-King Medical Award for performing extraordinary volunteerism in their communities.

Classes in the Career Action Series meet evenings and weekends and may be applied to a degree or certificate at Oakton. Featured classes meet at the Des Plaines campus, 1600 E. Golf Road.

Students are invited to explore health care career opportunities at two info sessions at Oakton Community College, 1600 E. Golf Road, Des Plaines.

Oakton Faculty & Staffmembers Recognized for Excellence

 

 John Carzoli, professor of physics, and Michael Madill, instructor of geography, history, and political science, are the recipients of the 2010 Ray Hartstein Awards for Outstanding Professional Excellence in Teaching at Oakton Community College. The honors were announced Aug. 19 at the College’s annual breakfast.

Carzoli, chair of the physical science department, joined Oakton full-time in 1999.

Fall Junior High Softball Camp Begins September 7

The Niles Township High School District 219 Athletic Departments and Youth Softball Development will hold the first camp program specifically designed for junior high school softball players. The Fall Junior High Softball Camp is for girls entering sixth through eighth grade in the fall of 2010.

 

Camp will be held from 5:30 to 7 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays and 10 to 11:30 a.m. on Saturdays starting September 7 and running through October 30 (a total of 24 sessions) at Niles West High School, 5701 W.
