The Village of Skokie Encourages Bicycle Safety

 

As a reminder to residents, the State of Illinois and the Village of Skokie have specific laws to protect pedestrians, motorists and cyclists.

 

By Village Ordinance, riders under the age of 16 must:

  • wear a helmet.
  • Obey all traffic signs and markings.
  • No more than two cyclists may ride side by side.
  • Cyclist can ride on Skokie sidewalks, minding pedestrians, except for the B5Downtown Business District(Oakton Street from Skokie

    Boulevard to Lockwood Avenue, extending north and south on Lincoln Avenue between Cleveland Street and Babb Avenue.)

Other bicycle safety suggestions include:

  • Plan your route.

  • Always ride with the flow of traffic.

  • Yield to others including animals.

  • Wear bright or reflective clothiing

  • Do not wear headphones, listen to iPods, or distract yourself with wireless communication devices.   

  • Following the laws and suggested safety procedures ensure a protected and proactive way to get around town.
