Niles West Pursues "Green" Addition

A "green" six-classroom addition has been approved for Niles West High School by the board and by LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design).  Not only will the addition be energy efficient, but will provide a valuable educational environment for students.  Superintendent Nanciann Gatta sees "one of the benefits is really about teaching children in their formative years to be green."  Plans include the ability to meaure and monitor CO2 readings to HVAC and other sensors.  Administrators believe that initial costs will be recouped over 20 years and lower annual maintenance operation and improved occupant health will be achieved.  The new addition is expected to be completed for the 2009-10 school year.
