Fine Highlights Flood Recovery Resources

GLENVIEW, IL – As Illinoisans continue cleaning and salvaging after the recent historic flooding, state Rep. Laura Fine (D-Glenview) is encouraging residents to contact the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to see if they qualify for assistance. 

Niles North's Kretsos Earns Chemistry Teaching Award

Niles North High School teacher John Kretsos, a 2013 Golden Apple Award winner, has earned another teaching honor. He will receive the 2013 Davidson Award from the Illinois Chemical Education Foundation and the Chemical Industry Council of Illinois. The award is presented annually for outstanding achievement in teaching high school chemistry. Kretsos will receive his award at the 56th annual Scholarship Luncheon held on May 22 in Des Plaines, IL.

Niles West Theatre Presents Two Exciting Showcases on May 21 and 23

The Niles West Theatre Department concludes the season with two exciting studio showcases “Portraits: 30 in 60” and “On the Spot: An Improv Experience” in the Black Box Theatre at 5701 West Oakton, Skokie.

 

Niles North Scientists Receive 38 Awards at State Contest

Twenty-six Niles North High School students competed at the Illinois Junior Academy of Science State Exposition held recently at the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana and received 25 Gold awards, five Silver awards, four Best in Category awards and other honors. Six students competed in the paper session and 24 competed in the project session. All of these students had to qualify for the state competition during the regional competition held at Niles North. The highest level projects can win a gold, silver, bronze or participant award.

Niles North Spanish Students Earn 30 Awards During National Examinations

Niles North High School students earned 22 Gold and eight Silver awards for their performances on the National Spanish Examination, an assessment given to students in grades 6 through 12 to measure proficiency and achievement of students studying Spanish as a second language.

 

Niles West News Editor Invited to Prestigious Conference in Washington, DC

Niles West High School junior Gabrielle Abesamis has been selected to represent the state of Illinois in the 2013 Al Neuharth Free Spirit and Journalism Conference. The program was created to honor Al Neuharth, founder of USA TODAY and the Freedom Forum, for his long and distinguished career in journalism and his free spirit. The program is one of Mr. Neuharth’s most important legacies and it will continue on in his memory. Abesamis will play a special role in that legacy since she is in the first class of Free Spirits since his passing.

 

Niles West Science Students Receive more than 40 Awards at State

Thirty-eight Niles West High School students competed at the Illinois Junior Academy of Science State Exposition held at the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana on May 3 and 4 and received 25 Gold awards, 10 Silver awards, five Best in Category awards and other honors. The highest level projects can win a gold, silver, bronze or participant award. Those that are deemed the highest achieving in each category can win a “Best in Category” award.

 

Niles West Poetry Champion to Perform at Printers Row Lit Fest

Niles West High School student Jordan Goldberg is the winner of his school’s Poetry Out Loud Competition. He performed “Calling Him Back from Layoff” and “Domestic Situation” to win his school’s competition. He also recited those poems at the Poetry Out Loud Suburban Regional Final held in Des Plaines, IL. He said that “Calling Him Back from Layoff” was his stronger poem, selected because it is very deep and meaningful, though it sounds light. He said, “I was a bit shocked when I won, but very happy at the same time.

Niles North Teacher Credited for Student's Achievement in Recent Publication

n the new publication From Possibility to Success: Achieving Positive Student Outcomes in Inclusive Classrooms by Patrick Schwarz, Niles North High School teacher Anne Zavell is credited for setting a student on the path to achieving his dreams. In Chapter Three, the section “Josh: Respect the Dream,” a young man with significant learning disabilities is profiled.

IT’S FINALLY HERE!!! After months of planning, days of shooting, and over a hundred hours in post, my short documentary film, Out of Print, is finally complete! This is my second final short film. A huge thanks to Robert M. Katzman for being such a captivating man, and a special thanks to Sofia Kerpan for being a kick ass documentary partner: she deserves way more credit than I gave her. I kindly ask you all to take several minutes to indulge in the fascinating, emotional, and inspiring world of Bob and his collection in “Out of Print”.

The organization accomplishes its mission by partnering with families and communities (businesses, neighbors, civic & cultural organizations, caregivers, volunteer groups) to optimize personal outcomes for individuals with developmental disabilities, ensuring that every individual under its care has control of his or her own destiny.

I want to take this opportunity to introduce myself as the new chair of Skokie Voice.  I have been a member of Skokie Voice since 2011 and served on the Community Safety Committee and, in 2012, became a director and secretary of the organization.  Since its formation three years ago, Skokie Voice's mission has been to provide citizens of Skokie with a channel of communication with your government.  We at  Skokie Voice are looking forward to continuing working to address the concerns of residents on issues of importance.

Gun Safety Legislation

If you are in favor of gun safety legislation in Illinois, make your voice heard before the vote in Springfield next week. Please call your state senator and state representative or send them an email as soon as possible, asking them to support legislation that includes:
•    Universal background checks for ALL gun purchases and transfer
•    Reporting of lost or stolen firearms to law enforcement
•    Titling guns like cars
•    “May” issue permitting for concealed carry
